The thrill of the challenge

On 6 and 7 March 2027, Siena will host the Strade Bianche 2027 weekend, one of the most prestigious classics in world cycling.

Saturday 6 March will be devoted to the men's and women's professional races; the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche will take place on Sunday 7 March.

All the races start at Siena's Fortezza Medicea and finish in the magnificent Piazza del Campo.

The routes cross the Crete Senesi and the Sienese Chianti, including long sections of white gravel roads.

The countryside around Siena has exceptional landscape value and offers some highly scenic cycling routes.

Professional Strade Bianche: 6 March 2027

The professional Strade Bianche is part of the UCI WorldTour calendar. World champions, Olympic champions and previous winners compete on the gravel roads around Siena.

The distances, elevation gains and sectors for the 2027 professional routes have not yet been published on the official Strade Bianche website; the technical details will need to be checked before final publication.

Gran Fondo Strade Bianche: 7 March 2027

The Gran Fondo Strade Bianche is a major amateur cycling event that lets riders tackle the gravel roads used by the professionals. The official event presentation states that there will be 8,500 participants.

The official technical pages describe two routes: the 137.7 km Gran Fondo, with 2,200 metres of total elevation gain and 42.6 km of white gravel roads across 10 sectors, and the 87 km Medio Fondo, with 1,350 metres of total elevation gain and 21.6 km of white gravel roads across 6 sectors.

Registration for the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche 2027 will open on Monday 7 September 2026.

The official registration page still refers to 2026: the entry fee and final maximum number of race entries for 2027 have not yet been published. Check for updates in the registration information section before entering.

Gran Fondo and Medio Fondo Strade Bianche routes

The start and first section
The races start from the Fortezza Medicea in Siena's historic centre. The official technical pages give a 7:30 a.m. start for the Medio Fondo and a 9:00 a.m. start for the Gran Fondo. The first gravel sectors are Vidritta, Bagnaia and Radi; the two routes separate after Radi.

The shorter route
The Medio Fondo is 87 km long and includes 21.6 km of white gravel roads across 6 sectors, with 1,350 metres of total elevation gain. After Radi it also crosses Presciano, Colle Pinzuto and Le Tolfe.

The longer route
The Gran Fondo is 137.7 km long and includes 42.6 km of white gravel roads across 10 sectors, with 2,200 metres of total elevation gain. The additional sectors include Piana, Serravalle, San Martino in Grania, Guistrigona and Monteaperti.

The final kilometres are shared by both routes. About 2 km from the finish, riders enter Via Esterna di Fontebranda; the paved section begins after Porta di Fontebranda and the gradient reaches 16% on Via Santa Caterina. The finish line is in Piazza del Campo.
